Retirement is what people often look forward to when they wish they weren’t at work. That’s the model that they learned as they grew up. You work until about age 65 and then you can cut free and do what you want in your golden years.

That model has a lot of assumptions built into it. One is often unspoken but it’s the foundation. It can change everything that you’ve known about retirement. That unspoken foundation is that retirement is a function of finances, not age.

This can work for you or it can work against you. Many people in this economy are finding this out the hard way. They are having to postpone their retirement, sometimes indefinitely. Others are being forced back into the labor market.

How do you get the function of finances to work for you? One of the easiest ways is to work from home in a home based business. When you make money from home, you enjoy a whole host of benefits. You can have more control over your income. You can save a lot on your taxes. And, you can “retire” at any age.

Not all home based businesses are equal though. Some are based on linear income which means if you stop, so does the income. You need a residual income business. That’s where you build the income up and it continues to come in even if you go away on an extended vacation.

Do You Want More Certainty In Your Life?

In times of great changes such as what we are currently experiencing, people experience great uncertainty about what the future will bring. With uncertainty comes less security, more stress and a feeling of not being in control.

Some people try to get security and control with a job. Unfortunately, they are finding more and more that there is no job security. Even as the economy shows signs of recovery, the layoffs are continuing. Some are calling it a “job loss” recovery instead of a jobless recovery.

The mantra of get a good education, find a good job and work hard was what the Baby Boomers were raised on. My grandparents who ran their own “country store” told me that on more than one occasion. That advice was based on the post war boom years and it worked for about 30 years.

Until you are in control of your income and that income meets your needs, you will be at the mercy of employers or the government. Most people don’t want to take that step because there is no guarantee of success. There never has been, even with jobs. One of the anecdotes that drove this home to me starts with the question of do dogs like bones? The answer is that dogs like meat but settle for bones because they don’t get to chose.

Working from home in your own home based business can be an answer for you. If you make the mind shift of getting paid for results instead of effort, you can be very successful. It’s like football – they don’t give you a touchdown for effort if the ball is on the one inch line. You have to get the result of putting it in the end zone to score.

If the cost of gas goes up, you can increase your results to compensate. If you have unexpected expenses show up, you can increase your results. You don’t have to ask a boss for a raise.

Having the skills to create income is the best security you can have. Fortunately, it’s a learned skill. Most home based business opportunities, including mine, will give you the training to create real security in your life.

Time Freedom Is Worry Freedom

Since I work from home being my own boss, I don’t have to ask anyone else for time off. My son will be having some minor foot surgery done later this week. One of the requirements is that an adult be with him for 24 hours after the surgery. If my wife and I were working in a corporate job, we would have to figure out who burns a vacation day to be with him.

Since we both make money from home, once we get him home, it will be a day like any other day here. Since my network marketing business is a residual income, I could take the rest of the week off and the money would still come in.

It’s also comforting to know that if this surgery was major, heaven forbid, I would be able to be there for him without worrying about income.

How I spent my summer

With lifestyle freedom, I have been able to have an “endless summer” with my kids. I work a few hours per day from my home and I get to pick when. Because of that, I have been spending a lot of time with the ones I love.

We have gone to movies, built Lego kits, made stop action movies, and generally joked around. I keep getting pleasantly surprised by their intelligence, quick wit and humor.

I keep reminding myself how lucky I am. Most parents of grown children lament that they didn’t spend as much time as they wanted and that the kids grew up so fast.

My oldest is starting as a high school junior next week. I have two short years to enjoy him before he goes off to college. I intend to make the most of it. Because I work from home, I can.

Do You See More Of Your Boss Than Your Kids?

In recent times, families have come under more stress than ever before. The parents of today are likely to be the sandwich generation – looking after aging parents as well as their children. Employers are making even more demands with employees given cell phones, email and other ways to keep in touch after hours.

As a result of all of these pressures, usually it’s the kids that lose. They lose time with their parents. They lose out on activities because of a lack of a method of getting there. They lose out on love.

I read a somewhat sad commentary on the state of things. One working mother made the statement, “My son has my cell phone number, he can call me any time.” My thought was, “Why should he have to?”

I have enjoyed this summer. I have spent most of it with my sons doing what they want to do. I have helped create about 20 stop action movies so far with my 10 year old. I have discovered and been amazed at his intelligence, creativity and humor in coming up with movie ideas. We still have about three weeks before school starts.

I would never have had the opportunity to have this kind of experience and relationship had I gone somewhere else to work. They are only this age once in life. I’m glad I’m not missing it.

How do I enjoy this lifestyle freedom, I work from home with my own home based business. It’s such a blessing.
