Did you make a New Year’s resolution? We’re at Day 28, 4 weeks into it. How are you doing? By now, either you have done it long enough for it to take root as a new lifestyle or you have dropped it all together.

It doesn’t matter whether it was to lose weight, make more money or get a better job, if you haven’t done it enough to where it is your new habit, it will go away.

Making more money from home is a common resolution. The idea gets people fired up. They want to fire their boss and set their own hours. Commitment is when you continue your actions long after the emotion which caused you to start has long passed. In other words, are you still pursuing your dream after the fever has worn off?

One of the big obstacles for people to make money from home is that they find out they will have to put a significant amount of effort to achieve it and it may take years. They then fall back to the dissatisfying level that they were at because it doesn’t take as much effort.

One of the best things to remember is that you don’t have to wait until next the New Year to make another resolution. If you still want to make more money from home and were initially discouraged, I urge you to use your experience to make a more realistic goal and start again now.

Success isn’t that you never fall down, it’s more of that you keep getting back up each time you fall.

Having my own business has been great for me and people ask me about it. In this time of uncertainty, there are a lot of people looking for more financial security.

I recommend a good network marketing business, the best type of a direct selling business. There are a lot of good business reasons for this. In his book, Start Late, Finish Rich, David Bach devotes an entire chapter to creating wealth with a direct selling business. He initially had a negative view of it but after doing his research, he realized that this was a very viable way to create money. Warren Buffett, yes, that Warren Buffett, has bought network marketing businesses because of the boom in their popularity. And this was way before the current economic situation.

What do you get with a good network marketing business? For one thing, it’s a business in a box. You don’t have to start from scratch developing products, marketing materials, stocking inventory, etc. Boom! It’s in there!

You get good training. In network marketing, the person who introduces you to the business won’t become successful unless they help others become successful. It’s in their best interest to get you the best training and mentoring possible.

With network marketing, you can take advantage of two secrets of the wealthy. They are residual income and leverage. Residual Income is where the income continues to come in for the same effort, like an author who receives royalties for her books. You can leverage other people’s efforts. As their business grows, your business grow.

Your success depends on your results not the hours you put in. In the beginning, you will be underpaid. After some success, you will become overpaid as your income increases exponentially.

In these scary, uncertain economic times filled with the specters of layoffs, unemployment and recession, remember that fear itself magnifies the bad things. Many people worry about the pressures on the family budget, how they will pay for college, and being the sandwich generation, how they will they care for their aging parents.

Are these issues real? They can be. They can also be dealt with instead of just feared.

Step 1 is to determine what you want. My goal was lifestyle freedom which includes time freedom and money freedom. Getting to that automatically meant that I had the resources to deal with whatever came up.

Step 2 is determine how you are going to get there. After my research was over, I realized I needed at least one residual income stream. A linear income stream like selling stuff on ebay was not going to make me rich. This also meant starting a home based business. I chose network marketing because it fit my criteria.

Step 3 is implementation. I have chosen the method of online network marketing as my main focus. This allows me to play to my strengths. This is my success formula. I continue to participate in training so that I can help myself and my team succeed.

One benefit that is hardly mentioned in the sales brochures and web sites is the change in your perception of control. If you are fearful, you are automatically placing control outside of yourself. When you start becoming successful in your own business, you automatically start pulling that control within you. This feeling permeates your life. You will feel in control in all other situations as well.

I recently saw J. Paul Getty’s formula for success – rise early, work hard, strike oil. At first glance you may be tempted to dismiss it as a kind of ‘win the lottery’ type of success, however, a closer look yields a lot of information.

First, his goal was to strike oil. It was not a random happening. This was what he was working hard to achieve.

Next, the oil business is a residual income business. Once he struck oil, he was able to receive money from that well for a long time to come. As he brought in more and more wells, his money freedom and time freedom increased.

A modern retelling of the formula would be rise early, work hard and achieve success.
