Memories and Relationships

I have been transferring some family memories into the digital age. These are VHS-C tapes that were shot in 1994 & 1995 right after we bought our first camcorder. I’m transferring them to DVD. It’s a window back to another time. This was before the Internet hit big, before 9/11 and before I worked for myself.

In these videos, there are images of people who are no longer with us and an absence of arrivals since then. Many people say that at the end of their lives, what really counts is relationships and memories.

At the time of the filming of these videos, both my wife and I were working more than full time jobs. We had our routines of dropping our son off at day care in the morning and picking him up when we could in the afternoon. The day care providers got to spend more time interacting and influencing our son than we did.

Things changed when our second son came along. My wife became a stay at home mother. This allowed us to raise our kids but put the burden of income squarely on my shoulders. In an effort to make up the losses and to capitalize on the then tech bubble, I got a new position with a new company. To this day, my youngest son’s recollection of that job was that I came home during or after dinner.

The dot bombs hit soon after and eventually, I was laid off. This actually was a good thing in the long run as it helped me get the courage to work for myself. Since then, I have been actively involved with both my sons’ lives. Often, I am the only dad at my youngest son’s elementary school parties and I was the only dad to chaperone my oldest son’s choir trip to Walt Disney World.

What has made this possible has been my home based business. I had started working my business while I was still working and I had a Plan B in place when the time came. Making money from home has allowed me to spend quantity time with my kids. When you spend quantity time with your kids, the quality time appears more and more.

A home based business like mine can be started on a part time basis and grown until you can fire your boss. It can take an hour or two per day but the results are worth it, especially if you have young kids. My oldest son was 2 and 3 in those videos. Now he’s ending his junior year in high school and will soon be starting his adult life. Being able to be a bigger part of his life has created memories that will last both of our lifetimes.

Tax Season Is Over Or Is It?

Tax season especially for CPAs and other tax professionals is over. April 15th is the deadline to file your taxes and every year the media covers the long line of cars at the main post office trying to get that postmark on their return before midnight. When that’s accomplished, they can forget about taxes until next year.

I propose that you think about taxes for 2009. How much did you pay for 2008? Would you like a way to save on your taxes for this year? Start a home based business.

A home based business allows you to shift some of your normal after tax expenses to before tax expenses. Normally people pay taxes and then pay expenses. Businesses pay expenses and then pay taxes.

Allowance paid to your kids is not tax deductible, but hire them into your business and their payments become a business expense. If you create a home office, portions of your mortgage, utilities, etc. becomes a business expense. These and other items can lower your tax burden over $300/month. That’s like getting an instant net raise of $300 without asking your boss.

I am not a tax professional and you should talk with one before you do anything. You can also look at a book called Lower Your Taxes – Big Time! by Sandy Botkin. In fact, the title of his first chapter is, “Why You Would Be Brain Dead Not To Start A Home-Based Business (If You Don’t Already Have One)”

If you would like to find more about whether a home based business is for you, pick up your free copy of “The Perfect Business” CD at FreeRKCDForYou.com. Robert Kiyoskai, of Rich Dad, Poor Dad fame, gives you more information about your own business.

Jobs for College Seniors

The job market for college seniors is pretty tight. There was an article in the news that talked about how the economy was making the job market for college seniors pretty bleak. Many will decide to return for that graduate degree which in effect is saying, we’ll try again later. Many will take jobs in the food industry just to bring in some money and many will just quit.

What I’m seeing is a group of people who are giving up their power and depending on outside circumstances to decide their fate. Some of those people will realize that they control their lives and will take matters into their own hands.

Starting a network marketing business is something that can be done even before they graduate. They can work 5-10 hours per week to build their business on a part time income. What’s in their favor is that network marketing actually does better when the economy downturns!

As they become successful, their income can continue to grow. Within 5 years of graduation, their residual income can reach a point that they can ‘retire’. Imagine a 5 year career with the rest of their life to do what they want.

This 5 year career is not limited to college students, but is open to anyone who wants to take control of their lives at any age.

If you would like to find out more whether this would be a good choice for you, go to FreeRKCDForYou.com and get a free CD called, “The Perfect Business”, by Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Rich Dad’s Cashflow Quadrant. What do you have to lose?

Rules For A Better 2009

This time of year the mainstream media always publishes articles on how to get ahead in the coming year. They offer tips for improving your health to getting more for your money. It always amuses me, especially when they talk of financial subjects, that they come from a scarcity point of view. They seem to think that this is as good as it’s going to get so you have to make the most of what you have now.

My thought is, to improve your financial situation, MAKE MORE MONEY! What a novel idea!

This world is one of abundance and growth. When you plant corn, you don’t get a plant with just one seed or even just a few. You get a plant with multiple ears of corn, each with hundreds of seeds.

The financial pie is not finite. If it were, there would be only the same amount of money as there was in ancient times when there were just a few million people on the earth. Only now, that amount would be split amongst 6 billion people.

A good idea can create money out of thin air. One man thought of a way to transmit voices over copper wire which created billions and billions of dollars in the telecommunications industry.

In your own economy, you can start your own business. A good network marketing opportunity is a business in a box. All you add is your talents and efforts. If you don’t know where to start or even if it’s for you, you can get a free CD from RIchard Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The Cashflow Quadrant, called The Perfect Business at FreeRKCDForYou.com.

Just because other people say there is a recession doesn’t mean you have to participate in it.
