Your Independence Day

Here in the United States, the 4th of July is celebrated as Independence Day. It is the anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. It is often celebrated with fireworks, parades and period costumes. So how does this apply to you now?

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was not made after the war was won and independence was a fact. It was made during a time of unclear direction. Some delegates to the Continental Congress still wanted to reconcile with the British crown while others were vocal in their support for a total break. The final decision to create the document cleared up all hesitation and uncertainty. It created a new direction and unified goal for everyone involved. What’s also important is that they made to commitment to stake their life on achieving this goal. As Ben Franklin said, “We have to hang together now or we will certainly hang separately.”

Many people are like that congressional body. They want a better life on one hand but on the other hand, they are familiar with their situation. Only when they make a decision with commitment to go forward towards their own independence can it be achieved. Does it mean that they are independent when they make the decision? No, but it’s a good first start.

Make your declaration. Write it down along with why you want your independence. Put it where you can see it often. It will help get you past “the times that try men’s souls.” There may be struggle, but at the end you will be able to say, “I’m glad I did.”
